Nigel Bell is principle of ECOdesign Architects, working from the bushfire-prone Blue Mountains NSW. He has been involved in the last 20 years in bushfire education, writing and presentations, with over 30 years as a leading architectural practitioner in balancing sustainability and bushfire requirements. His bushfire projects have recently featured in Sanctuary issue 51 and 53. Nigel facilitated community bushfire recovery through 2009 following the Victorian bushfires, 2013 in the lower Blue Mountains, plus extensively through the wider fire grounds in 2020. He has represented the Australian Institute of Architects on the three Australian ‘bushfire’ Standards and as an expert witness to the 2020 Royal Commission.
